Elder law: We assist older people, their families and caregivers. Our goal is to help elderly clients remain as independent as possible, to preserve assets, to obtain coverage for health and long term care expenses through programs such as MaineCare (Maine Medicaid), Medicare, long term care insurance and Medicare supplemental insurance, and to plan for the future with Wills, Trusts, Durable Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Care Directives and Living Wills. Estate planning and probate: We assist clients of all ages plan for the possibility of death or incapacity and minimize estate and income taxes. We assist in the preparation of Wills, Trusts (including trusts to reduce estate taxes, Living Trusts and Supplemental Needs Trusts), Durable Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Care Directives and Living Wills. Special Needs Trusts: We help disabled adults, disabled children and their families preserve MaineCare eligibility (Maine Medicaid) and SSI by establishing Special Needs Trusts. We help parents provide for their disabled children or other disabled relatives in their Wills while preserving the child’s or adult’s benefits. We also collaborate with personal injury attorneys and divorce attorneys to help their disabled clients protect settlement funds while maintaining the clients’ benefits. Real estate: We help clients who are buying, selling or transferring real estate and businesses by: negotiating purchase and sale agreements, preparing deeds, searching titles, conducting closings, transferring family real estate, and issuing title insurance. We also help clients who are in disputes over real estate, such as boundary line disputes, by negotiating, providing representation in court, and acting as mediator or neutral outside of the courtroom. Divorce and family law: We represent clients facing divorce or separation who present issues involving child custody, paternity, marital property division, and spousal support (alimony), We assist clients in both traditional and non-traditional families, including unmarried and same-sex couples. We act as guardian ad litem on behalf of children in family matters. We act as neutral mediator to help people resolve disputes outside the courtroom. We assist clients who need protection from abuse or protection from harassment. We also help clients in adoption matters, including people making use of reproductive technology and surrogacy.
